Tajani’s comments come after Salvini, Italy’s other deputy prime minister as well as transport minister and League party chief, welcomed its strong showing in Sunday’s election in Germany.
“I support the EPP (European People’s Party) and the CDU-CSU (Christian Democrats).
“I have always said so,” Tajani said.
“As far as I’m concerned, the AfD is not an interlocutor of ours.
“I say this as FI secretary and EPP vice-president, because it has a completely different vision from ours.
“It is not a political party that has positive ideas about Italy, they say that Italy must leave the euro,” he continued.
“And it acts a bit like a schoolteacher when it comes to public debt too and I do not agree with it.
“I respect all those who vote for different parties in different countries, but, as far as I’m concerned, the AfD’s positions are irreconcilable with mine.”
