Eduard Oprea, a 40-year-old Romanian, continues to be held in detention for rape and robbery after Judge Giulia Proto rejected his plea and signed the order to keep him in jail as a precautionary measure.

The man was carrying AUD 900 along with the victim's earrings when he was arrested.

Oprea told Judge Proto that he had met the woman in a bar and that they had drunk a large quantity of alcohol together.

"When we left the place, we headed towards Colle Oppio. At a certain point we were approached by two Arabs, one of whom attacked me and I was forced to leave," he said.

Defense lawyer Andrea Palmiero will be filing an appeal for his client's release.
