The lockdown will last until at least February 28.
Shops and schools will close, while movement between municipalities will be forbidden except for health or work reasons.
The autonomous province of Bolzano will also go into lockdown, as well as the province of Perugia, in the central region of Umbria, six towns in Abruzzo and 27 towns in Molise.
The rest of the country will remain in either low-risk “yellow zones” or moderate-risk “orange zones”.
Italy on Sunday recorded 270 deaths in the previous 24 hours, as well as 11,600 new cases.
The national R rate, or reproduction rate, is stable at 0.84 compared to last week.
