A landslide of “vast proportions” reportedly broke away from a cliff in the San Biagio area overlooking the seafront at around 9:30 am.
Local mayor Daniele Milano told Italian news agency ANSA that there were no immediate reports of victims.
Rubble from the landslide reportedly ended up around houses in the area and reached parts of the beach.
The former mayor of Amalfi, Antonio De Luca, said consolidation works on that particular stretch of cliff had been carried out two years ago.
He urged authorities to open a probe into the works and the cause of the landslide.
