Fondazione Cinema per Roma said the photo is intended as a tribute to one of the greatest and most beloved actresses in Italian and international cinema, who died 50 years ago.
It portrays her smiling amid photographers after she won the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in Daniel Mann’s The Rose Tattoo at the 28th Academy Awards in 1956.
Magnani, who rose to fame with her performance of Pina in Roberto Rossellini’s 1945 neorealist masterpiece Rome, Open City, memorably running after a Nazi truck as it carried away her betrothed Francesco, was the first Italian actress to win the prestigious award.
Rome Film Festival runs in the capital from October 18-29.
