Another strong quake was felt in Marche yesterday, after a big tremor had already given residents a nasty shock on Wednesday.
The second quake, whose epicentre was in the same area off the coasts of Ancona and Pesaro, was felt particularly intensely by residents of upper-story flats in Ancona.
The 5.7 magnitude earthquake in Marche on Wednesday was the strongest tremor registered on the northern Marche coast since 1930, National Geophysics and Vulcanology Institute INGV reported.
The 1930 quake, the biggest ever in Marche, also hit the area of Senigallia, and measured 5.8 in magnitude, the institute said.
Thursday's biggest quake struck at 7:07 am, and was followed by another of a magnitude of 5.2 only minutes after, and around 70 aftershocks.
Frightened people took to the streets due to fear of buildings collapsing.
There were several cases of masonry breaking away and cracks appearing in walls.
The tremors were felt outside the central region, and as far away as Rome.
Schools in many Marche cities were closed as a precautionary measure on Wednesday, and services along the Adriatic railway were suspended for several hours.
