The students are staging a sit-in outside Rome’s main courthouse after two young people were arrested in the clashes, which drew the ire of Prime Minister Meloni.
The protesters initially sought to break into a meeting of the university’s academic senate, then there were clashes when they tried to break through a cordon of riot police at an exit.
There was also an altercation at a police station.
“Devastation, attacks, assaults on a Rectorate and on a police station, with a police director getting punched,” said the prime minister.
“This is not demonstrating, it’s delinquency,” she added.
