Around 17.6 million Italians are planning to go on a holiday in July, according to a recent study by Italian agriculture association Coldiretti, with 86 per cent of them choosing to travel within the Belpaese.

That means more than 15 million Italians will travel within Italy this month, alongside the millions more arriving from overseas.

Most Italian holidaymakers will go away for one to two weeks, but a very lucky 3 per cent will take a month-long holiday.

Seventy per cent of Italian travellers will be heading to the coast, with the mountains the second most popular destination.

More than half of them plan to stay in private accommodation already owned or rented by family or friends.

According to Coldiretti, more than 26 per cent of Italian travellers said that terrorist attacks in other countries had influenced their choice to holiday in Italy.

Another important consideration was food, which was the top factor for 19 per cent of Italian travellers when choosing a destination, and one of the factors for another 53 per cent.

While the first weekend of July marks the traditional start of the tourist season in Italy, even more people are expected to travel in August.

According to Coldiretti, both domestic and international tourists are expected to spend at least €8 billion more in Italy this summer than Italian holidaymakers spend abroad.

Germans are the single biggest group of inbound tourists to Italy (20 per cent), followed by Americans (11 per cent), the French (10 per cent) and Brits (9 per cent).
