The home team could and should have won comfortably, with 63 per cent of the ball and a staggering 18 shots on goal compared to the visitors’ three.

Poluzzi was kept busy early on, pulling off a great fingertip save from a long-range effort.

Ascoli’s Botteghin went close from distance with his 40-yard effort rattling the right post.

Dionisi hit a freekick well but Poluzzi was there again to punch it clear.

The away goalkeeper was quickly becoming the star as he made yet another diving save to stop Botteghin’s header.

Dionosi went close again with a near post shot, but Poluzzi got down low and kept Sudtirol in the game.

In the second half Matteo Rover got a shot away for the visitors, but it was tame and right at Leali.

The breakthrough goal finally came in the 89th minute when Ascoli were awarded a penalty thanks to a stomp on Eramo.

Gondo sent the keeper the wrong way, calmly slotting it into the bottom-right corner.

Sudtirol remain fourth, while Ascoli are in 12th, four points behind the promotion playoff zone.
