Heavy rain caused landslides and flooding in several parts of the country, while avalanche alerts were issued in various areas of the Dolomites.
A 51-year-old worker drowned after floodwater swept him into a canal while he was assessing damage from the wave of wet and wintry weather near Potenza, in the southern region of Basilicata.
On Sunday, around 60 families were evacuated in the vicinity of Modena, in the Emilia-Romagna region, as the Panaro River burst its banks causing widespread flooding.
Firefighters have used rubber dinghies to rescue people left stranded as well as animals that had no means of escape from the water cascading through the region.
Countless dogs were seen being pulled from the water by emergency services, which are bracing themselves for more problems amid fears avalanches could form if the floods continue.

Firefighters have carried out over 2200 interventions for the past 48 hours in the central and northern regions, especially in Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Emilia-Romagna, Piedmont, Lombardy and Tuscany.
