Despite having slightly less possession, Atalanta created 13 chances to the visitors’ six, with an expected goals score of 2.61 to 0.93.

The Bergamo side took the lead in under five minutes when Gianluca Scamacca finished from close range after Dortmund’s defence was unable to clear a low ball into the box that really shouldn’t have troubled them.

Davide Zappacosta doubled Atalanta’s advantage on the night and brought them level on aggregate just before half time when his long-range strike took a fortuitous deflection.

Four minutes after a scare in the 53rd minute when Dortmund hit the post, Mario Pasalic scored Atalanta’s third goal with a header from Marten De Roon’s cross.

In the 75th minute, Dortmund made it 3-1 on the night and 3-3 on aggregate when Karim Adeyemi, five minutes after coming off the bench, rifled a curling shot into the top corner.

The tie would have a most dramatic finish in the 94th minute when, after a horrible turnover by Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, Ramy Bensebaini tried to backheel the resulting cross away for a corner—but in doing so caught Nikola Krstovic in the face with his studs.

After a VAR review, a penalty was awarded and Bensebaini was given a second yellow card. Lazar Samardzic made no mistake from the spot with a wonderful penalty into the top corner to give Atalanta a 4-3 win on aggregate and send them through to the Round of 16.
