Possession was evenly contested between the two teams with both creating nine chances on goal.
Atalanta took the lead in the 33rd minute through Giorgio Scalvini, who profited from the excellent work of Davide Zappacosta’s orchestrated play that ended with a cutback straight to him in the six-yard box.
The visitors doubled their lead ten minutes later when Matteo Ruggeri’s initial shot was saved by Sporting goalkeeper Antonio Adan, but the ball was not deflected to safety. Instead, it went right behind Adan with an empty net beckoning and Ruggeri making no mistake.
Sporting got one back in the second half when Viktor Gyokeres converted his penalty off the left-hand post in the 76th minute.
Atalanta are top of the group with six points from six.
