The German champions dominated from the opening minutes, scoring three goals in the first half and adding three more after the break in a performance that underlined their status as one of the tournament favourites.

Bayern opened the scoring in the 12th minute through Josip Stanišić’s tap-in from a yard out, setting the tone for a relentless attacking performance.

The lead quickly grew with Michael Olise’s curling effort from the edge of the box and Serge Gnabry’s tidy finish past the onrushing Marco Carnessechi, leaving Atalanta stunned and trailing heavily at half-time.

Any hopes of a comeback disappeared after the break as Bayern continued to press. Nicolas Jackson scored in the 52nd minute with a low shot across the keeper before Olise had his brace with a goal that was almost identical to his first.

Jamal Musiala then found the net from close range to make it 6-0 for the visitors, whose clinical finishing and high tempo overwhelmed the Italian side.

Atalanta managed a consolation goal through Mario Pašalić, who slid in to finish from close range, but it did little to change the overall complexion of the match.

The emphatic victory gives Bayern a huge advantage ahead of the second leg in Munich, where Atalanta now face an enormous task to keep their Champions League campaign alive.
