Atalanta were almost ahead in the 4th minute, but Teun Koopmeiners’ volley that beat the keeper was blocked by a desperate Martin Erlic.
Just after the break, Sassuolo’s Armand Laureiente’s shot skimmed the crossbar.
In the 63rd minute it was the visitors’ turn to hit the crossbar, this time through Charles De Ketelaere.
Atalanta finally got the breakthrough goal in the 83rd minute when De Ketelaere headed in a Matteo Ruggeri cross. It appeared as though Sassuolo keeper Andrea Consigli made the save, but the ball had just crossed the line.
Nadir Zortea sealed the points for Atalanta three minutes into added time when he received it out wide and blasted a shot into the bottom-left corner from around 20 yards out.
