The suspicion came amid a row caused by his criticism of the centre-left opposition for not filibustering the 2024 budget bill.

A filibuster would have caused Italy to go into emergency provisional financial administration at the end of last year.

Amid calls from the centre right for him to quit or be disciplined, Degni told ANSA Tuesday he had been impartial in the case.

Government parties have blasted Degni for a social media post in which he said “you should have had them foaming at the mouth” with the filibuster he advocated.

“My impartiality is not in question,” said the member of Italy’s top State auditing body.

He said he had merely told the opposition parties that they “should have used all parliamentary tools” to show the level of opposition to the budget which they had expressed verbally.

The court said earlier it was weighing Degni’s words amid the government calls for his resignation.
