In the match, which lasted a little over an hour, the 28-year-old from Macerata breezed past her opponent with a straight sets victory of 6-3, 6-1.
Giorgi will return to the court on Saturday to battle it out against Germany’s Angelique Kerber, who is seeded 17 at the tournament and won the Grand Slam in 2016.
Fellow Italian Andreas Seppi didn’t fare as well on Thursday, losing to Swiss player Stan Wawrinka in five sets on Margaret Court Arena.
Wawrinka won the first three games before an alarming collapse saw the Seppi claim the first set 6-3.
Things were going well for Seppi who broke to lead 5-4 in the second set, Wawrinka then rattled off three straight games to level the match.
Wawrinka won the third 6-3, but Seppi ensured the match was going the distance by winning the fourth by the same scoreline.
Wawrinka was then forced to summon yet another comeback after being broken to concede a 4-3 lead in the decider, but once again he rattled off three straight games to seal a gutsy win.
Moving into the third round of the tournament, Giorgi will represent Italy alongside Ligurian Fabio Fognini, who will play Argentine No. 22 seed Guido Pella at Melbourne Arena on Friday afternoon.
