Avondale FC starting XI: Bennett (GK), Claridge, Genitsaris (C), Lamaj, Goad, Galluccio, Candia, Kellond-Knight, Nishihara, Steiner, Okino

That ambition was immediately tested in Round 18 with a tough away trip to face a resurgent Ringwood City, a side pushing for a finals spot and boasting strong form.

From the outset, Ringwood brought the intensity, pressing hard and disrupting Avondale’s rhythm. Their early efforts were rewarded when midfield talent Katrina Nikpour broke the deadlock inside the opening 20 minutes. Despite several attacking moves from the Azzurre, Ringwood’s compact defending and efficient counter-pressing held firm, sending the hosts into the break with a 1-0 lead.

During the break, Coach Donnelly called on the group’s leadership and experience, reminding the squad of the resilience that has defined their campaign. Veterans led the way, while younger players were reassured and empowered. The message was clear: we’ve faced this before - now let’s respond.

And respond they did.

The second half saw the Avengers shift into a gear few teams can match. With tempo, width and unrelenting pressure, the game flipped in dramatic fashion.

Kurea Okino struck first in the 58th minute, finding space between the lines and calmly converting to level the match. Just two minutes later, Addison Steiner capped off a sweeping team move to put Avondale ahead.

Okino then returned with her second in the 67th minute, capitalising on a clever pass from Nishihara to give the visitors breathing space. Finally, substitute Simone Kenny, in scintillating form of late, sealed the result in the 80th minute with a composed finish, marking her third goal in as many appearances.

It was another strong display from a group that continues to prove it is not just a collection of talented individuals, but a cohesive, connected, champion team. With the finals series on the horizon, this performance served as the perfect reminder that the Avengers are hungry for more.

The Azzurre next play away to Bundoora United at Epping Stadium on Sunday, August 3 at 3 p.m.
