Avondale FC starting XI: Bennett (GK), Claridge, Genitsaris (C), Lamaj, Goad, Galluccio, Candia, Kellond-Knight, Nishihara, Steiner, Okino

With promotion to the 2026 NPLW within reach, the Azzurre needed only a single point to seal their place in the top tier. What followed, however, was far more than a result; it was a statement of intent, a commanding performance that embodied everything this program has worked to build.

From the outset, the atmosphere was electric. A large crowd packed the stands, while the senior men’s team manned the barbecue, helping create a festive and unified club environment. On the pitch, the women’s team responded in spectacular fashion, producing their highest-scoring performance of the season in a 17–0 demolition of Monash University.

The scoreline told part of the story, but the true significance of the performance lay in the attitude and execution. From the first whistle to the last, the team maintained intensity, discipline and a relentless attacking mindset. It was a complete display of the high-tempo, free-flowing football that has become the hallmark of head coach Del Donnelly’s side.

Among a host of standout individual performances, striker Addison Steiner delivered an extraordinary display of clinical finishing and intelligent movement, netting eight goals in a performance that will be remembered for years to come. Her attacking partner, Kurea Okino, was equally impressive, contributing four goals and continuing her outstanding run of form.

Late in the match, club captain and centre back Gulcan Genitsaris added her name to the scoresheet, converting a penalty in a fitting moment of celebration. The goal was not only a rare personal milestone but a symbolic capstone to a day that marked the culmination of years of dedication and progress.

The match also featured moments of personal and club significance. Midfielder Chantelle Candia made her 60th appearance, officially becoming the most-capped player in the history of Avondale’s women’s program, a milestone reflecting her consistency, leadership and deep connection to the club.

Adding to the emotion of the day, it was also the eve of a new chapter for Genitsaris, who steps into a full-time role as Avondale’s Community Engagement Officer, a move that highlights the club’s commitment to investing in its people beyond the pitch.

With the initial goal, set at the program’s inception, of promotion now secured, attention turns quickly to the next challenge: chasing silverware. The team is back in action this Friday night, travelling to Jubilee Park to face a red-hot Ringwood City in a match that promises to test their momentum and resolve.

The job may not be finished, but the message is clear: this team belongs at the top, and they’re not done making history.
