Avondale FC starting XI: Bennett (GK), Claridge, Genitsaris (C), Lamaj, Nishihara, Lines, Galluccio, Candia, Kellond-Knight, Steiner, Okino
Goals: Steiner x2
Bundoora came out firing and opened the scoring early with a stunning long-range strike that soared into the top corner, leaving Brooke Bennett with no chance. It was a goal worthy of admiration and served as a timely wake-up call for the Azzurre, who had struggled to find their usual rhythm up to that point.
From then on, Avondale kicked into gear. The midfield began to dictate the tempo, and wave after wave of pressure followed. After several missed chances, the breakthrough finally came just before halftime when Kurea Okino broke in behind the defence and unselfishly squared the ball to Addison Steiner, who tapped home the equaliser with composure, sending both sides into the break level.
The second half unfolded in similar fashion. Avondale controlled possession and created the more dangerous opportunities, while Bundoora looked to strike on the counter. The match remained finely poised until a moment of brilliance tipped the balance.
Goalkeeper Brooke Bennett launched a pinpoint goal kick deep into the attacking half, picking out Steiner in stride. With pace and precision, Steiner beat her marker, raced through one-on-one and coolly slotted home her second of the afternoon with a goal that would ultimately prove decisive.
In the closing stages, the Avengers showcased strong game management, defending resolutely and controlling the tempo to see out the result. It was a gritty win, built on focus and discipline.
With this victory, Avondale stays five points clear at the top of the table and moves one step closer to sealing the premiership. The squad now enjoys a well-earned bye week before hosting the Eltham Redbacks at Avenger Park on August 17 at 3 p.m.
Then in Round 21 they’ll travel to second-placed Keilor Park for a clash with major title implications.
