Bayern’s breakthrough on the night came in the 25th minute through a penalty awarded for a handball. Harry Kane, after being allowed a retake due to Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Sportiello coming off his line to save the first effort, made no mistake from the spot.

Kane had his brace shortly after the break as the English striker turned two men on the edge of the box before firing into the top corner.

Lennart Karl made it 3-0 with a low shot into the far post from a tight angle before Luis Diaz compounded Atalanta’s misery with a chip over the keeper.

Atalanta grabbed a late consolation goal through a Lazar Samardzic header at the back post from a corner.
