The incident occurred after the local forestry police tracked the two-year-old bear via his radio collar as the docile animal went on one of his frequent trips into town in search of a snack.

The rangers, tasked with deterring bears from approaching urban centres, were unable to keep up with Juan Carrito, one of four cubs belonging to the much-loved Amarena, who is well known in the L’Aquila province.

As he wandered around the town and tasted fruit on the trees, Juan Carrito eventually followed his nose to a bakery in the centre and smashed a window to break in.

After entering the premises, the bear devoured the trays of biscuits from the oven before making his escape undisturbed.

The Marsican brown bear is a subspecies of the brown bear, with only around 50 of the animals left in existence, compared to 100 in 1980.
