Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a hallucinatory work full of ghosts, goblins and micro-monsters on bicycles in which Michael Keaton reprises his titular role.

The film features Burton’s partner Monica Bellucci and Jenny ‘Wednesday Addams’ Ortega, along with Willem Defoe.

It was greeted with wild applause as it showed ‘out of competition’.

The reboot, however, got mixed reviews with the BBC saying, “it surpasses the original” while The Guardian said, “it is full of gaudy set prices but fails to live up to the original”.

Also on Wednesday night, Alien, Ghostbusters and Avatar star Sigourney Weaver got a career Golden Lion as she starred in an evening dedicated to women.

While accepting the award, Weaver revealed, “I adore Italian cinema, I would like a part in an Italian film.”

Subsequently, screen icons Angelina Jolie and Cate Blanchett lit up the Lido on the second day of the festival on Thursday.

“I feel as vulnerable as Callas,” said Jolie as she presented her turn as the legendary opera singer in Pablo Larraín’s biopic Maria.

Larrain said, “we celebrate the artist in order to reveal the woman”.

Regarding her role as a shamed woman in Alfonso Cuaron’s Apple TV series Disclaimer, Blanchett said, “I interpret the dark side that is in all of us.”
