The relegation was confirmed as a result of Brescia getting a point after their 1-1 draw with Pisa.

The win was La Strega’s first victory in 12 games, a statistic that always makes relegation highly likely.

Modena took the lead in the 19th minute when Davide Diaw beat both his direct opponent and the Benevento goalkeeper to get his head to the ball after Luca Magnino sent it in.

Benevento equalised on the half hour mark when Camillo Ciano’s bullet strike from 25 yards went straight into the bottom-right corner before Riccardo Gagno could even dive.

Daam Foulon went close to giving the hosts the lead, but his strike missed by inches.

The Belgian would eventually score in first-half stoppage time after getting on the end of a Kamil Glik flick-on.

He hit the ball first time on the half-volley from close range while Gagno dived out of the way.

In the second half, Diaw had a golden opportunity to score after taking the ball past Alberto Paleari but missed the open goal.

The loss means Modena cannot make the playoffs because even if they were to finish on equal points with Palermo in eighth, their head-to-head would see them miss out.
