It was reported by Italian media that the 86-year-old had been admitted to the San Rafaele hospital due to undisclosed pain for a check-up, and that a range of "routine tests" were being conducted.

The 86-year-old centre-right Forza Italia (FI) leader and four-time former PM has in the past endured a range of health issues, including prostate cancer.

In 2016 he underwent heart surgery and over the past year or so, after having contracted COVID-19 in 2020, has been repeatedly admitted to hospital, at one point for a three-week stay.

Four years ago, in April 2019, Berlusconi was admitted to the same San Raffaele hospital and was operated on for intestinal obstruction.

He had initially arrived at the hospital to undergo several tests, but following analysis of the results, it was decided an immediate operation under general anesthesia was required.

Two years later, in January 2021, he was admitted to specialist hospital, the Cardiothoracic Center of Monaco, where he was residing at the time.

Berlusconi's long-time trusted doctor Alberto Zangrillo reassured family, friends and the media at the time that he was fine.

The media billionaire is expected to leave the San Raffaele Hospital on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning at the latest, sources said.
