Brisbane is bearing witness to some great tennis as the host of this year’s United Cup, and Matteo Berrettini, the Italian world number 6 in the ATP rankings, set the Pat Rafter Arena ablaze when he met Italian supporters at a small private event on December 30, at which the mayor of Brisbane, Adrian Schrinner, was also present. This was after his men’s singles victory over Brazilian Thiago Montero.
The mayor himself, in front of the ecstatic fans, interviewed the Italian champion and asked him about his impression of the city.
Berretini was pleased with the match, and said that he was happy to be in Brisbane, and further, Australia, before expressing his surprise at the great participation of Italian fans at the event:
“I know Italians are everywhere in the world, but I did not expect so much warmth and enthusiasm here, thank you very much for your support.
Berrettini then continued:
“On my day off I will finally be able to explore this fantastic city.”
Also welcoming the Italian champion were Consul Luna Angelini Marinucci, Comites President Rosaria Vecchio, Secretary General of the QLD Chamber of Commerce and NT Federica Marinatto, and a delegation from the New Italian Generation sports association.
Marinatto commented:
“It was an honour to be able to attend the match and meet the Italian team in person. They are incredible youngsters and I am sure they will do well in the much-anticipated Australian Open in Melbourne.”
The secretary added:
“Sport, as always, unites, and it was great to spend a day among compatriots, cheering and making our athletes feel welcome.”
After the meeting with compatriots, Matteo Berrettini and Camilla Rosatello played mixed doubles.
COMITES president Rosaria Vecchio commented:
“It was truly a day of sport and sociality, we are very proud to have been able to host and meet the Italian team, cheering all together, we felt more united and strengthened our sense of community.”
