Bertolini, 57, who represented Italy 150 times as a player, took charge in 2017 and oversaw Italy’s fabulous run to the 2019 World Cup quarter-finals.

The team’s early exit this year followed a disappointing Euro 2022 tournament, where the side finished bottom of their group with one point.

“It would be too naive and obvious to seek a scapegoat,” the former coach said via social media.

“I don’t feel any resentment and I have no reason to feel the guilty party or to try and find one.

“I do have reason to give thanks for the very beautiful and intense years (in charge) that I will always carry with me.

“I hope the national team and all of the women’s soccer movement grows”.

South Africa sensationally dumped Italy out of the World Cup, coming from a goal down twice in a chaotic and pulsating 3-2 win in Wellington last week.

Until last Wednesday night the South Africans had never won a match at the tournament, let alone qualified for the knockout rounds.

The Italians headed home after two horrible nights in Wellington.

They were thrashed 5-0 by Sweden two weeks ago but were expected to rebound against the world No.54 South Africans.

A day after Italy’s exit, a statement posted on Instagram and signed by “players of the national team” alleged the team were “not put in the condition” to succeed.

The statement was shared by veteran forwards Cristiana Girelli and Barbara Bonansea, among others.
