The operation is linked to an investigation into the illegal disposal of over 1000 tonnes of industrial waste at the Tufino public facility in the province of Naples, which is meant to process ordinary urban refuse.
This illegal dumping of ferrous waste caused damage to the plants, which were knocked out of order for long periods, and caused around half a million euros in damages to Naples’s waste agency Sapna.
Naples police, meanwhile, seized 200 million euros worth of assets from three businessmen convicted of felonies regarding waste management, brothers Giovanni, Cuono and Salvatore Pellini.
The siblings have been definitively convicted for illegal waste trafficking and they are blamed for pollution in Acerra, a town close to Naples in Campania’s so-called ‘Land of Fires’.
Criminal organisations have dumped and burned trash and toxic waste in the area for decades.
The assets had been previously impounded, but the brothers had won a legal challenge against the original confiscation order on the grounds that it was filed too late.
