Despite taking an early lead and controlling large portions of the first half, Atalanta were unable to hold on as Athletic staged a stirring comeback after the break.

The home side started the night with real attacking intent and were rewarded in the 16th minute when Gianluca Scamacca powered home a header from close range to put them ahead.

Atalanta’s forward lines were lively throughout the opening period, and they looked capable of building a valuable advantage before the break.

However, Athletic refused to be overwhelmed. Just before the hour mark, Gorka Guruzeta equalised with a well-taken finish that injected belief into the visitors, and Athletic quickly turned the game on its head.

Two goals in quick succession—a header from Robert Navarro in the 70th minute and a well-placed shot into the bottom corner from substitute Nico Serrano four minutes later—swung the momentum firmly in Athletic’s favour and put Atalanta’s knockout hopes in jeopardy.

Atalanta continued to push forward in search of a way back into the match, and Nikola Krstović pulled one back in the dying moments with a tap in.

Despite an intense final period, the hosts couldn’t find a late leveller as Athletic held on for a crucial away victory.

The defeat leaves Atalanta needing a win in their final group game to secure automatic qualification, now dependent on other results as well. They’ll rue what could have been, as a win this morning would have seen them sit third on the table.
