The victims are Andrea Galimberti, 53, from Como, and Sara Stefanelli, 41, from Genoa.

The bodies were located at an altitude of over 4500 metres in the area of Mur de la Cote that leads to the top of the French side of Mont Blanc.

The bodies were taken to Chamonix.

The Italian climbers were last reported to be stranded near the summit due to the extreme weather at an altitude of 4500 metres.

As part of the search operation carried out by French authorities from Chamonix, French media reported that the bodies of two South Korean climbers were also recovered on Tuesday.

The South Korean mountaineers had also been missing since last Saturday.
