Bologna, Bolzano and Florence.
These three cities make up the podium of the Italian provinces with the best quality of life in 2022, according to the annual survey of Italy's leading financial newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore. It is the fifth time in 33 years that the Emilian province has come first for the quality of life of its inhabitants, improving by five positions compared to last year.
This year's edition of the report also understandably took the major shocks that occurred during the year into consideration: the war in Ukraine, high energy prices and inflation.
Metropolitan cities declined overall, with Milan in eighth place, Rome in 31st and Turin in 40th.
Analysing some of the survey’s results on a regional level, Emilia-Romagna is in a good position: next to Bologna's supremacy, the ranking sees Parma in 9th place and Reggio Emilia in 13th.
The provinces of Trentino-Alto Adige remain firmly in the top 10, with Bolzano in second place and Trento in fifth. In Tuscany, there are three provinces at the top of the rankings: in addition to Florence, the new entries include Siena, which comes in at 4th place (+11 positions), and Pisa (+12 positions) in 10th place.
Among the metropolitan cities, Milan, which was in second place in 2021, remains in the top 10, but drops down to eighth place, while Rome slips to 31st (-18 places). Cagliari rises two places (18th place), Genoa is in 27th place (losing only one position), and Turin is 40th (-12 places).
At the bottom are Naples (98th place, down eight positions) and Palermo (88th place, up seven positions). Trieste, which last year recorded 580.9 points, loses the top of the ranking and drops six positions, to seventh place.
With regard to the six areas into which the 90 indicators are divided, the podium sees Belluno, Bologna and Bolzano at the top for Wealth and Consumption; Milan, Trieste and Rome for Business and Work; Bologna, Modena and Rome for Demographics, Health and Society; Pisa, Siena and Aosta for Environment and Services; Oristano, Pordenone and Sondrio for Justice and Security; and Florence, Trieste and Gorizia for Culture and Leisure.
The ranking of the quality of life in the Italian provinces compiled by the newspaper also includes the new edition of the Women's Quality of Life Index, which comprises 12 parameters. According to the ranking, the province of Monza and Brianza offers the greatest well-being to women, followed by Treviso (winner of the first edition in 2021) and Cagliari.
