The bomb was made from a petrol can with the source of ignition that is characteristic of a Molotov cocktail.
It was thrown into one of the windows on the side of the building from Acland Street.
The explosion shattered all of the windows and the door, as well as sparking a fire which destroyed the furniture in the hall.
The wife and young children of the building’s keeper were sleeping when the incident occurred.
Police and fire crews were called to the scene by Aldo Cirone, 25.
Consul General Mario Ferrari di Carpi was also notified and rushed to the scene from his Toorak residence.
Local authorities are investigating the perpetrator of the crime and their motive.
