The bottle in question is a jeroboam, a double magnum, in other words three litres (four times the volume of a standard bottle), from the “particularly precious” 1990 vintage.
The label is Romanée Conti Grand Cru, one of the most prestigious in the world, with a 25-hectare vineyard in Vosne-Romanée, Burgundy.
The record was set by the Piedmont auction house Bolaffi, in an 11-hour session, with almost 500 participants who spent a total of €835,000.
Romanée Conti has long produced the most expensive wine in the world, according to the Wine-Searcher website, with an average price of US$19,574 per bottle.
The Romanée Conti record is US$558,000 for a 1945 vintage bottle (when only 600 bottles were produced) at an auction organised by Sotheby’s two years ago.
