It’s Italy's first gold at the championships at the French resort, and Brigone's first world championship gold.

The 32-year-old from Milan took the gold ahead of Swiss Wendy Haldener, silver, and Austria's Ricarda Haaser, bronze.

US superstar Mikaela Shiffrin was 96/100ths of a second behind Brignone after the SuperG and closing fast in the slalom, but skied out at the last gate.

Brignone, nicknamed La Tigre, won the World Cup overall title in 2020, becoming the first Italian female to achieve this feat.

At the 2022 Winter Olympics, she won a silver medal in the giant slalom and a bronze in the combined.

She had only skied slalom once on the World Cup tour this season, and also had demons of her own to deal with.

“Two years ago in Cortina I was first after super-G and then I just did three gates,” Brignone said, in reference to the start of her disastrous campaign at her home world championships in Cortina D’Ampezzo.

She said that winning her first world championship gold medal in the combined helped erase the pain of that loss and was "the top".

"Starting the world championships like this is the best.

"Now they will no longer tell me 'your trophy cabinet is missing a gold medal', but above all I am very satisfied with my performance.

"That's also why I was moved and it doesn't happen often," the 32-year-old from Milan to Rai state broadcaster, said

"In the other editions I was never at my best, but now I feel 100 per cent.

"I was charged up and I managed to do what I hoped.

"Today I promised myself to bring out the slalom skier in me and I succeeded".
