Located in the small municipality of Caiazzo, in the southern region of Campania, Pepe in Grani was deemed the best of 500 pizzerias throughout the country.
The restaurants were visited by 100 anonymous judges and the final ranking was drawn up by 50 Top Pizza, the first online guide dedicated entirely to Italian pizzerias.
Pepe in Grani won due to the high quality of its food, service, drinks list and atmosphere.
It was followed by Naples' Pizzeria Gino Sorbillo, while Francesco & Salvatore Salvo in San Giorgio a Cremano, in the province of Naples, rounded out the top three.
The awards ceremony was held in Naples at the Castel dell'Ovo, and 19 of the top 50 restaurants were located in Campania.
The rankings, however, represent all the major varieties of pizza across the different Italian regions.
Lazio was next in line for the most pizzerias on the list, boasting six restaurants.
Tuscany followed with five restaurants, trailed by a tie between Lombardy and Emilia Romagna.
Further down the list sat Puglia, Sicily, Abruzzo, Trentino-Alto Adige and Veneto, which is home to two of the top 10 pizzerias in the nation: I Tigli in San Bonifacio and Saporè in San Martino Buon Albergo.
During the awards ceremony, Isabella De Cham from 1947 Pizza Fritta in Naples received the Pizzamaker of the Year Award, while Pierluigi Roscioli from Rome's Antico Forno Roscioli got the Baker of the Year Award and Morsi & Rimorsi in Aversa took home the Innovative Pizzzeria of the Year Award.
