A tourist catamaran crashed into the Italian navy's storied Amerigo Vespucci training ship in Venice on Thursday evening, sources said Friday.

The incident took place in front of hundreds of people, who crowded the premises on the San Marco shore.

The Venice catamaran boat that takes tourists on musical and gastronomic tours of the lagoon was performing a U-turn off St Mark's Square when the captain misjudged the turning circle and one of its forward masts hit a mast on the Vespucci's prow.

When the pilot of the tourist boat realised that he had collided with the ship, the backed up to free the top of his mast from that of the Vespucci.

Luckily, no one was hurt.

The catamaran suffered minor damage but the Vespucci was relatively unscathed.
