Elisa Cicco told ANSA the process was underway at the end of a meeting with the president of the Valle d'Aosta Region, Renzo Testolin.
The two convened to resolve the problem of the new, and former, French name, which was changed to Cervinia amid Fascist Italianisation of place names near the French and Austrian borders in the 1930s.
“The process concerns the modification of the current toponym,” said Cicco.
“We will send the request for the name change to the Region.”
The change back to Le Breuil spurred ire from the right-wing party of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Brothers of Italy, which said it smacked of the Taliban and was anti-Italian.
