It may not be the ‘white Christmas’ that many imagine, however there’s no lack of festive spirit at the most wonderful time of the year, even here in Australia.
It’s enough to leave behind the nostalgia of much-loved Italian traditions to embrace new ones, including barbecues, seafood, lunches and festive lights.
Melbourne’s Christmas calendar in December is packed, and once again this year, the suburbs, squares and streets have been transformed to make way for a variety of cultural events, concerts and activities for the little ones.
Carols in the Piazza, The Thorn at the Furlan Club
A spectacular night dedicated to Christmas carols has been organised for December 23 at The Thorn, part of the historic Furlan club in Thornbury. The event will feature talented singers such as Dean Canan, Alessia Licitra, the Severini Trio, That Singing Studio, Will Musig, Ali Qua and a visit from Father Christmas for the little ones. All proceeds will go to the organisation Dementia Australia.
Christmas Roller Rink, Piazza Italia in Carlton
A roller skating rink has popped up in Argyle Square, better known as Piazza Italia, for a fun time shared with family and friends. Admission is free and open to all, although reservations are required. The backdrop is also a beautiful, giant Christmas tree, covered with spectacular decorations.
The night markets, Queen Victoria Market
Under Melbourne's starry lights, the Queen Victoria night markets resume during the Christmas and summer break.
Street food, refreshing drinks and traditional dishes, all accompanied by Christmas carols, fake snow, a giant gingerbread man and a special visit from Santa.
The Docklands Christmas Maze
An interactive adventure embodying the spirit of the festive season has come to life at Docklands. Young and old will be able to lose themselves in a giant maze, through games, quizzes and riddles; the goal will be to find Santa's elves. Also up for grabs are four $500 vouchers to spend in the Docklands district.
