His passing comes six years after that of his brother and long-time collaborator Antonio, with whom he made a string of critically acclaimed movies.
Antonio Taviani died on April 14, 2018.
Paolo died in the arms of his wife Lina Nerli and his children Ermanno and Valentina, the family said.
At the Cannes Film Festival, the Taviani brothers won the Palme d’Or for their cult classic Padre Padrone in 1977 and the Grand Prix du Jury for La notte di San Lorenzo (The Night of the Shooting Stars) in 1982.
In 2012, they won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival with Caesar Must Die.
