The concert, organised by the Musical Band of the State Police (La Banda musicale della Polizia di Stato) was held in Rome’s Piazza del Viminale, which was lit up with the colours of the Italian flag.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese participated in the concert.

Rome Mayor Virgina Raggi also attended.

“Rome is with the families who have lost loved ones, and is grateful to the doctors and nurses who are always on the frontline against coronavirus,” she said in a Facebook post.

The event was presented by journalist Valentina Bisti.

The band performed several songs, dedicating a moment to the famed composer Ennio Morricone, who passed away last Monday aged 91.

The evening ended with the Italian national anthem, sung by Baglioni.
