His announcement came after members of Ultimate Generazione (UG, Last Generation) on Saturday poured a substance that made the waters of Rome’s iconic Barcaccia fountain, near the Spanish Steps, turn black.

It was only the latest in a long series of acts of civil disobedience carried out by UG to highlight the need to address the climate crisis.

“We are thinking of introducing a (new) administrative penalty,” Sangiuliano said during a visit to Naples.

“It is being studied by the technical and legal experts who work with the ministry.

“The penalty will be handed down by the prefect to make those who perform these acts pay the costs of restoring these places.

“The costs are high because you have to call in specialist professionals and expensive machinery.”

UG say the substances they use for their actions are easy to remove and leave no permanent damage.

They say the costs of their actions are nothing compared to those of the climate crisis.

The group pointed out that the crisis already manifests in many ways in Italy, including the severe drought in the north of the country.
