CO.AS.IT. is a non-profit organisation for Italians and Australians of Italian descent, which offers myriad services to the community, from welfare and aged care services to child care and language classes.
Founded in Melbourne in 1968, CO.AS.IT. has flourished hand-in-hand with our city’s multicultural identity and its various migrant communities, including the Italian community.
The non-profit offered support and assistance to new arrivals in the ‘60s and ‘70s who found themselves in a foreign land with a completely different language and culture, and helped them settle in.
Today, the organisation continues to support the first generation of Italian migrants, along with those who have followed up until this very day.
Along the way, CO.AS.IT. has established the Italian Historical Society (IHS) and the Museo Italiano, located on Carlton’s Faraday Street, both of which have helped endorse Italy’s history and culture in Melbourne.
The organisation has also been integral to the preservation and promotion of the Italian language in Australia.
To celebrate CO.AS.IT.’s many achievements across five decades, the organisation has published a special edition magazine, which was inserted in the Thursday, September 13 edition of Il Globo.
The publication traces CO.AS.IT.’s journey from its inception to its role in today’s society, and showcases the many contributions it has made to the Italian community in Melbourne and Australia.
