Speaking in Davos, the former law professor said he was confident his coalition government will last its full five-year term, adding that conditions in Italy will improve within two years.

“We are a strong coalition and the Five Star Movement (M5S) and the League have a great sense of responsibility,” he said to Bloomberg TV.

“We are working strenuously, there is a united spirit and I am very confident we can last five years.”

Conte also ruled out any change to the government’s formation.

Addressing the World Economic Forum later, Conte said his administration’s political vision is centred on the word “people” and focuses on “human beings, families and communities”.

“This is the Europe we are dreaming of,” he declared.

“A Europe of the people, made by the people and for the people.”

In his speech, Conte also said there is a need to revise “all the red tapes” of the European institutions and their “democratic norms” to protect the EU citizens from a crisis and a “bleak” vision of the future.

“If we Europeans were more united in this endeavour, we would be more united in strengthening the values of the EU - freedom, social justice, fair treatment for everyone, rule of law,” he added.

The World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, began on Tuesday and runs until Friday.
