“I am happy to be able to make this official visit to Chile, which I have wanted to do for some time,” Mattarella told a delegation representing the Italian community in Chile.
“I am happy to have been able to make it at an important time for the international community, due to the existing tensions,” he added.
“[There is a] need to hear from those countries that have a vocation for peace, equilibrium and international collaboration that is the proper, fairest and most appropriate path for the fate of the world.
“This place is an expression of these values because it is a connection point.”
The head of state said Italy and Chile are “close and in tune” on a political, cultural and economic level.
He also said the peoples are united by “a bond of a human nature”, as reflected by the Italian community and Chileans of Italian origin, “who are very integrated in the country”.
Mattarella also mentioned “the many Chileans who come to Italy” and thanked the embassy officials “for their excellent work”.
