Italian second-tier club SPAL have appointed former AS Roma captain Daniele De Rossi as their new head coach.

The 39-year-old De Rossi, who won the 2006 World Cup with Italy, is replacing Roberto Venturato.

In the top flight, also on Tuesday, Verona fired coach Gabriele Cioffi after four straight losses left the club in the relegation zone.

De Rossi was an assistant to Roberto Mancini when Italy won the European Championship last year, but left the role to pursue his goal of becoming a manager.

He signed a contract with SPAL that will run until 2024 on Tuesday.

De Rossi, who represented Italy 117 times, hung up his boots in 2020 after 18 years at Roma and a short stint with Argentinian top-flight side Boca Juniors.

SPAL, who were relegated to Serie B in 2020, are 14th in the table after eight games and travel to Cittadella on Saturday.

Verona have just one win and five points after nine matches and are 18th after a top-10 finish last season under Ivan Jurić, who then left for Torino.

Cioffi, who coached Udinese last season, had a contract through June 2024.

Local reports suggest that Diego López, who previously previously coached Cagliari, Bologna, Brescia and Universidad de Chile, will replace Cioffi.

Verona visit defending champions AC Milan on Sunday.
