Avondale starting XI: Manos (GK), Courtney-Perkins, Kamara, Edwards, Wellsmore, Towns (captain), Tevere, Trajcevski, Ahmed, Aguek, Kur

The Avengers made one change to their starting line up from their previous game with Kalilou Kamara coming in and replacing young Centre back Ethan Pisani.

On a perfect night for football, both teams started well with Avondale looking to control the early stages of possession.

In the 18th minute and against the run of play, Green Gully hit the lead. The Avengers responded well by gaining control of the ball and in the 34th minute found the leveller. Fullback Emelyn Wellsmore cut inside and past his direct opponent before playing a defence splitting through ball into Manny Aguek, who was fouled in the box by the oncoming keeper. Aguek calmly slotted the penalty kick to make it 1-1.

Eight minutes later and again against the run of play, Green Gully were themselves awarded a penalty which they converted to retake the lead.

Two minutes later, Avondale turned the ball over and were punished on the counter with curling shot from just outside the box.

Things went from bad to worse for The Avengers, who conceded another two goals in quick succession to make it 5-1.

In the 55th minute, Aguek was played in behind the Green Gully backline by Kur Kur. Aguek took the ball around the keeper and scored what proved to be a mere consolation for the Azzurri.

Despite Avondale creating several chances, the score remained 5-2. The Avengers now face Oakleigh Cannons at Avenger Park on Saturday afternoon in what is anticipated to be a crucial match, as only two points separate both teams in round 14 of the NPL VIC season.
