The brainchild of a catechist at Don Cosimo's church, the comic strip aims "to do catechism in a different way" and "to raise awareness of love and respect for animals," the statement said.
In the story, Don Cosimo aka Don Smemorino arrives in a town he doesn't know and restores a church that had been reduced to rubble.
"My love for animals was born when I was a kid," he said on his Instagram page.
"I remember when I saw a dog abandoned, or a cat, it made me sick to see they had been abandoned."
Don Cosimo is active on social media and as a poet in the fight against animal abandonment.
