The show is part of a 'Strombolian' eruption which began on Monday evening and could continue for weeks.

The vivid orange bursts of lava have been admired by residents of Catania, the city which lies below Europe’s tallest active volcano, and the nearby coastal town of Taormina.

In the past, Etna’s eruptions have caused flight delays due to widespread volcanic ash, however, Catania airport operated without any disruption on Tuesday.

Local authorities have reported no serious threat to the communities which reside on the volcano’s slopes.
