Brussels has reportedly found that “several pieces of Italian legislation do not comply with EU law”.
These legal incongruities relate to norms on bird protection and the 2006 REACH regulation aiming to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks posed by chemicals.
In its letter of formal notification, the European Commission alleges that “Italian legislation gives regions the power to authorise the killing or capture of wildlife species even in areas where hunting is prohibited, such as protected areas, and during the period of the year when hunting is prohibited,” in violation of the Birds Directive.
Moreover, it says Italy does not comply with the provisions of the REACH regulation concerning the use of lead in shot.
