In total, countries have access to around 194 billion euros in grants and low-interest loans from the EU.

The fifth request for a payment concerned 53 milestones and targets linked to the NRRP, a huge programme that seeks to make the Italian economy greener and more modern.

These included fundamental targets for the implementation of 14 reforms and 22 investments in sectors including competition, public tenders, waste and water management, the judicial system, education and public spending.

The Commission gave a positive assessment of Italy’s request for the payment of the fifth instalment on July 2.

Payment of the funding is dependent on the achievement of milestones regarding reforms and the projects themselves.
