Morrison didn’t give specific details but reiterated that the more Australians download the COVIDSafe App, the faster restrictions will be eased.
Here’s everything you need to know about the press conference.
Government to announce roll back of restrictions on May 8
Morrison said the National Cabinet will next Friday announce how restrictions will be rolled back as Australians have “earnt themselves an early mark”.
He also urged Australians – yet again – to download the COVIDSafe App, saying it will help states relax restrictions more readily.
Morrison didn’t provide specific details of which restrictions will be lifted – only that an announcement will be made next Friday.
Aged care sector to get $205 million in funding
Morrison said the aged care sector will receive a one-off $205 million payment to help facilities respond to a new industry code designed to protect residents from diseases like the coronavirus.
The payment will take the form of a $900 payment per residential bed for metropolitan homes and $1350 per residential bed for regional homes.
Less than 20 new cases a day
Chief Medical Officer Professor Brendan Murphy said as a whole, Australia was recording on average less than 20 new cases of coronavirus a day.
The country currently has 6675 confirmed cases, while the death toll currently stands at 93.
More than 570,000 Australians have been tested for the virus so far.
